5.8 to 5.9 Upgrade

Not quite finished with updates to 5.8 and 5.9 is released fixing a security vulnerability thought to have been fixed in 5.8.

I wouldn't try this with a 5.x to 6.x upgrade but

  • untar drupal-5.9.tar.gz
  • mv sites/default/settings.php settings.php.org
  • cp -a drupal-5.9/* drupal_core_directory

I did have css cache problems afterwards but disabling and re-enabling caching cleared them. drush cache clear works better.

Get a second opinion!

Several of the SimpleTest unit tests failed with this Drupal installation. However, much consoling came by simply running unit tests a second time.

We are trained professionals

Don't do this at home

Yes, MyDLLURTH is using SimpleTest on a production site. Specifically, we are using SimpleTest 6.x-1.1 with our Drupal 6.3 "vetting" site, where new additions to MyDLLURTH and LSNet web sites are configured and tested to comply with our notions of reasonable security and functionality. The warning to not use SimpleTest on a production site was considered sage advice for normal production sites, but this site mission directs us to control our risks and empower recovery from mistakes.

GeoNames Setup

Install the GeoNames module. A properly configured drush environment will help. From $WEBROOT/sites/all/modules :

drush pm install geonames

When adding GeoNames to Drupal 6.x sites, initialize $may_cache to 0 in the function prototype for geonames_tools_menu.

sed -i -e "s/menu(\$may_cache)/menu(\$may_cache=0)/g" geonames/geonames_tools.module

The GeoNames module options may now be enabled at admin/build/modules. After enabling, configure GeoNames at admin/settings/geonames for cache and other considerations.

Drupal at LSNet

Primary purpose of this site is to host the Drupal content formerly posted at ls.net. Regions like Jobs, Security Announcements and Domains are "things" we should visit with some frequency as part of managing our Drupal sites. As such they may be of interest to others involved in Drupal deployment.
